What Your LED Flashlight Can Do

The bright light of an LED flashlight can be an invaluable tool when on a camping or hunting trip, and a potential life saver in a home or car emergency. The power and efficiency of these light sources has made them incredibly popular throughout the world. How did these bright lights become so popular? How does the LED bulb in the flashlight actually work? Science and practicality have come together to create these innovative light sources - it may just be a good idea to know why.

What is an LED?

To understand how an LED flashlight works it is important to understand what an LED light is. LED stands for light-emitting diode. It is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current passes through it, like a simple circuit. This circuit produces electroluminescence, which can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet, and a number of different colors depending on the make up and condition of the semiconducting material used. These lights are often very small, typically less than 1 mm. Manufacturers usually add special optics or lenses to the chip to help with reflection, creating an incredibly powerful beam for the size of the bulb.

LED lights are embedded in a high-impact epoxy, which makes them virtually indestructible and therefore perfect for handheld lights. There are no loose or moving parts either. LED lights also produce no heat, allowing them to be used for long periods of time without concern of burning out.

LED Light Advantages

LED light technology has certain advantages that help it stand out for flashlight and lamp use - visibility, intensity, color and efficiency.

Visibility

LED lights naturally emit a high level of light, called luminous intensity. This visibility is increased by adding chips to the encapsulation or using secondary optics to distribute light. For most LED flashlights or lanterns, there are a number of individual light sources in a single lens.

Intensity

The intensity of the light is another characteristic of LED lights. The light output varies depending on the type of chip and encapsulation that is used. Although there is no industry standard for LED brightness or intensity, many manufacturers use terminology such as "ultra-bright" or "super-bright" to describe their lights. These lights have such a powerful beam that they can actually do damage to the human eye.

Color and Wavelength

Wavelength and color are other characteristics of LED lights. These lights have a pretty broad wavelength spectrum and thus can produce a number of different colors depending on the phosphorous or other compounds added to the encapsulation. The human eye is most responsive, however, to yellow, orange and red LED lights, probably why many come in those colors.

Efficiency

LEDs are solid-state devices with no moving parts. This allows the average LED light to operate for approximately 100,000 hours at relatively normal ambient temperature (25 degrees C). And unlike other incandescent bulbs, they can be turned on and off without undergoing too much wear and tear.

Putting It All Together

The basic construction of an LED flashlight is pretty straightforward. A simple closed circuit is used to charge the semiconductor diode, producing a brilliant, cool light. These lights illuminate our pathway in the dark, help us during power outages and signal for help. They are tremendous assets to a home, car or supply boxes.

Door Knobs - Welcome Beauty To Your Home

You touch them every day, and turn them in your hand. They can be smooth metal, cold stone or hard plastic. They are door knobs and they can be the sexiest thing in your house.

It is time to take notice of these inconspicuous pieces of hardware and make them stand out as the baubles of beauty that they are. Try changing from metal to Corian or stone for an "I know you want to touch me" look. Or go for a thoroughly modern look with the contrasted beauty of glass and metal door knobs.

No matter what types of door knobs you choose, changing them can really change the whole look of your house. The great thing about door knobs is that because they are small and common you could have a different knob on every door in your house and some may not notice; unless you play up the differences. Paint a door with a silver knob Tiffany's blue or if you have a glass knob that looks like Chanel jewelry upholster the door with Chanel fabric. The possibilities are endless.

And don't think that you have to throw away your old knobs. If they are still in good shape you can attach two or three to a decorative painted board and place it in the hall or entryway to hang coats and handbags. Try dipping them in paint and rolling or stamping them on acid-free cardstock to create paper of your own design for scrapbooking or card making. If you bought an old house you may have some vintage beauties on your hands that are ready to be sold on eBay for a profit.

But before you get ahead of yourself you have to find new door knobs to replace the old ones. Sure you could hit up your local home and hardware stores, but if you really want to peruse the best selection you should shop online. Not only will you find the greatest variety of knobs, but you will also find the most reasonable prices. Choose from antique doorknobs with Victorian and art deco appeal. Or try clean and modern nickel or chrome knobs or even old fashioned wood ones. The choice is yours.

There is one rule for doorknobs and that is generally glass or crystal ones work better on doors that are not frequently used. Since they can easily show dirt and wear and tear they are more often regulated to French doors, closet doors and others that aren't grasped on a daily basis. Follow this simple rule and the elegant touch of gorgeous door knobs can be yours.

It is these small finishing touches that will really make your house a home. So don't hesitate. Start shopping today and find the door knobs you've been dreaming of. After all the door knob is often the first impression guests get of your house and it is often one thing people don't forget. Choose door knobs that wet your guests' appetites giving them a glimpse of the beauty they will find should they enter your humble abode.

Home Ceiling Fans

Many people think that home ceiling fans are a thing of the past and that using air conditioning systems are now the best way to cool the house. But the truth is: having these pieces around the house can give you a number of benefits that you can never find in air conditioning cooling systems. Ceiling fans in general have the ability to lower the temperature of the room by 8 degrees. When they are used together with air conditioners, you can afford to raise the thermostat and save up on electricity in the process without compromising on comfort.
But technically, home ceiling fans do not really cool the room per se. But instead, it creates movement in the air which gives out a cooling effect on to your skin. Because of this, you can lessen the workload on your air conditioners without ever sacrificing on comfort.

One of the best things about having these kinds of cooling systems around is that they are energy efficient. Obviously, these things use up a relatively smaller amount of energy compared to air conditioners. To put it simply, they keep you comfortably cool at a lesser cost. But if you still want to save up even more, you also have the choice of picking Energy-star rated ceiling fans which have been especially designed to use the least amounts of energy during operation. These home ceiling fans are made specifically to help lower your electricity bills and decrease the amount of carbon that you give out to the environment. Energy Star rated fans have been known to help you save up as much as $165 for the fan's entire lifetime - which is already quite a lot.

As mentioned before, fans do not really cool that air but rather create more air movement within the room. With this said, it is very important that you get the right fan size to be able to cool a certain space efficiently. Consider the diameter of your fan blade and the speed that it can operate. It is ideal to find a fan that can efficiently cool the air with lesser revolutions per minute. The bigger the fan diameter, the lesser revolutions it takes to cool the room to a certain degree.

Remember, size diameter is a more important factor in cooling the room than the number of fan blades. So when you go out shopping for these kinds of appliance, find the largest fan diameter that could possibly fit your space. If your area is 75 square feet or less, a 36 inch diameter fan or smaller can do you fine. Between an area of 75 and 114 square feet, you should have a 36-42 inch diameter fan for sufficient cooling. And for room areas with more than 144 square feet, pick home ceiling fans with a diameter of 50-54 inches.

Remember, prices for these fans can vary depending on a lot of factors- from fan size, design, brand and many others. So learn to weigh comfort over cost. A basic home ceiling fan can range from $20-100 while the fancier designs and varieties can go up to $3,000 to $12,000.
